SCHOOL children got a taste of the continent at a market with a difference. They visited the first continental market in the Caerphilly county borough. It proved a big hit with local shoppers and visitors.
The market was held at Blackwood and Bargoed and visitors flocked to see the goods on sale.
It was initiated by Caerphilly council's tourism and economic development department and was supported by the market place in Blackwood and the shopping centre in Bargoed.
Chris Kearns, manager of Blackwood market place, said: "The market has been a real success bringing much more to the town centre than was anticipated.
"Visitor figures for the shopping mall more than tripled for the days of the event."
A group of pupils from Cwmfelinfach Primary School also enjoyed the experience.
The children had an opportunity to use the Spanish and French that they have been learning in school.
They also tasted cheeses, different types of bread, sausages, sweets and cakes.
Year-6 pupils Luke and Alex Stokes said: "It was great fun learning about the different foods on sale. There was so much to taste!"
The visit was part of an ongoing European project in which all the pupils take part. The school is linked closely with schools in Bulgaria, France, Germany and Spain and pupils exchange letters and project work.
