IT is back to the drawing board for Wales and John Toshack, says assistant boss Roy Evans.

The former Liverpool manager admitted that the go-for-broke system in Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Austria will be changed for tomorrow night's return match in Vienna.

"We know John (Toshack) is tactical and Wednesday is a different game than on Saturday and he will see the best way to play," Evans said.

"It has to be horses for courses in every game and only very good sides can go anywhere and play any way they like.

"We are a team that has its limitations with some strong points and it is a matter of trying to balance them to find a team performance that will benefit us."

After Saturday's defeat, Toshack and Evans carried the can and the Wales number two believes that lessons have been learned.

"John is very critical of himself, sometimes over critical, but that is not a bad thing," he said.

"It is only two games into the new regime we picked up a lot of points from Saturday and hopefully we can learn from that and become a more solid unit.

"It was a game that we were duty-bound to try to win and the system reflected that.

"At the end of the day it was not perfect and we left ourselves a bit open."

Evans dismissed the claim that the remaining five games in Group Six are meaningless and he insisted that the side will always be going out to compete even if qualification hopes are dead and buried.

"We are employed by the FAW and we have to try to do our best to win," said Evans. "John has said that we don't want to adulterate the competition but we have got to strike the balance between experimenting and results."

Another defeat would see Wales fans calling for wholesale changes but Evans believes that the rehabilitation process must be a gradual one.

"We have got the opportunity to try different things but that is not to say we will be rushing Under-21 players through - it has got to be a gradual thing," Evans said.

"Maybe one or two will come in for our get together at the end of the season in Spain so it is gradual but we have a chance to look some ideas."
