THE DAUGHTER of a Newport man who died from a heart attack has condemned the burglars who targeted his home during Wales's Gran Slam match and stole antiques.

A flintlock musket and a blunderbuss, neither of which can be fired, as well as a 4ft x 4ft oil painting were stolen from Richard Morgan's home in Maindee.

The painting is of a boat and Italian hillside and is in a gilt frame. Musician Mr Morgan, a bass guitar player, was 63 years old when he died on March 9. The father-of-two was buried on Monday at Newport's St Michael's Church.

His daughter Jackie Mitchell, 40, said: "I can't believe somebody would do this before we had even buried my father. The police said it could have been kids but I don't think it was.

"I can't see kids taking a 4ft x 4ft oil painting. There was some money in the house, about £2 in pennies but they didn't touch that.

"I think it was someone who knew him and I even think they could have been in the church for the funeral."

Mrs Mitchell, a credit control manager at the Argus, said she and her brother Stephen Morgan were "gutted" by the theft. I think the world has gone all to pot.

"I wanted to make the crime known so that if they try and sell them then people might know where they have come from.

"I would like to appeal to whoever stole them to please give them back." Gwent Police are investigating the burglary and confirmed the guns cannot be fired.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
