THE WELSH Development Agency has claimed that a £1m property purchase in Cwmbran will help fund new manufacturing investment in the area.

The agency has acquired a 20,000 sq ft office block which was owned, but no longer required, by Arvin Meritor.

The company employs 600 people in Cwmbran (on the old Lucas Girling site) to manufacture heavy vehicle braking systems in a 500,000 sq ft factory.

It plans to invest its sale proceeds in upgrading on-site manufacturing processes.

The WDA's Nic Neal said: "We're pleased that we were able to conclude a property deal which strengthens the presence in Cwmbran of a very important company within the local economy."

The Assembly's economic development minister Andrew Davies said: "South east Wales is building a reputation as a key location for companies in the automotive industry. This deal will augment its position as a location for high quality jobs and investment in this sector."

Most of the acquired office block will be leased to Lufthansa Resource Tech-nical Training (LRTT).

The company trains aviation technicians for airlines and is regarded as a contributor to the WDA's strategy for developing the aerospace industry in Wales.

LRTT is involved in a joint-venture with Cwmbran-based aviation recruitment and training specialist Blakebrook.

Together the firms offer classroom facilities in Cwmbran and workshop training in St Athan. As a result of their course over 100 trainees a year gain a licence for aircraft maintenance work.
