UP for grabs: One Welsh rugby shirt. Signed by current squad. £10,000.

Or at least that's the plan as a priest is hoping to net a small fortune towards a new community hall with the raffle of a signed shirt.

Father Thomas Regan will be praying for a Grand Slam victory for Wales on Saturday because it could mean a big cash conversion for the hall.

An anonymous donor has given his Abergavenny church a rugby shirt signed by the Welsh squad on the day they beat England.

Raffle tickets are now being sold to raise money towards the £65,000 Our Lady and St Michael RC Church need for the new hall, and the winner will be drawn on April 3.

Father Thomas is hoping his numbers will match up so he can score even more cash for the ambitious project - he says he has been told the shirt could raise up to £10,000 at a charity auction.

"If I win it I'll auction it to raise even more money for our funds," he said. But with 3,000 £1 tickets already printed, the community hall will win either way.

Wales' continued success will only add to the value of the shirt, which will be a much-sought-after prize.

Despite his Irish ancestry, Father Thomas has no doubts who he will be supporting today. Welsh born and bred, the 52-year-old rugby fanatic will be cheering on the home side when he watches the match with his 85-year-old mother, Maureen.

"Wales hasn't come this far in 27 years and there has been a great surge in Welsh confidence.

"I'm a true Welshman and believe in fair play, and will naturally congratulate the winning team."

As if to prove this point Father Thomas has two shrines at the church altar - one to St David and one to St Patrick.

He has been the Catholic parish priest in Abergavenny for five years.
