DETECTIVES were carrying out a murder investigation today after a father-of-three was stabbed in a city pub.
The man, named locally as Lemy Bullock, died at the Royal Gwent Hospital following a stabbing in Harveys pub in Commercial Road, Pill, at around 11.30pm last night.
Neighbours said the 36-year-old from Dolphin Court - next door to Harveys - worked at The Alma pub nearby.
Today police tape cordoned off the area as scenes of crime officers worked inside the pub and two officers guarded the pub.
Mr Bullock's neighbours spoke of their shock at the death of "a lovely lad". Marilyn Collier, 58, Mr Bullock's next-door neighbour, said: "I felt sick when I heard the news, I can't believe what has happened.
"He was a gentleman, a real family man - a brilliant father and a lovely lad. You could always rely on him."
Another neighbour, Maria Morgan, 51, said: "We are all in complete shock, he was like a son to me."
Terry Enos, 44, a friend of Mr Bullock, added: "I used to drink with him, he was one of the boys, a great lad."
At the scene, shocked locals have been gathering and flowers have been placed in tribute.
One read: "What can we say, we will never forget your smile. God Bless." Another said: "Rest In Peace Lemy, lots of love."
One resident, who did not want to be named, told the Argus there had been a disagreement at the pub last night. He said: "At about 10.30pm there was a argument, I left and went home."
One resident who moved to Pill from South Africa a number of years ago, said: "It's getting as bad here as it is there. I'm thinking of moving back." Police appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A spokeswoman said: "Gwent Police confirm they are investigating an incident following a stabbing in Harveys public house.
"A 36-year-old man was conveyed to the Royal Gwent Hospital where he later died. This is now being treated as a murder inquiry.
"The public can be reassured that there has been an increased police presence in Pill as part of an on-going initiative to reduce crime and disorder. These patrols will continue."
