BUSINESS advice and free breakfast was on the menu for staff and students of the University of Wales, Newport, during the fourth annual Enterprise Week.

Event organiser Emma Williams, of the university's innovation, creativity and enterprise (ICE) centre, said: "The aim of Enterprise Week is to give students and staff the opportunity to understand more about entrepreneurship and explore the possibility of starting their own businesses.

"We hosted a series of seminars and workshops from a variety of business support organisations, including Taste of Enterprise, which offer free business support and space to pre-start businesses."

Among those queuing up for a free bacon sandwich and some hints on setting up his own company was mature student Steve Hughes, who is studying for an MA in business and enterprise.

"I've created a product which I hope to sell on the Internet," said the 53-year-old. "Before coming to university I was in sales and marketing for medical and pharmaceutical equipment for 20 years, and then spent four years as a commercial driver on oil rigs in the Persian Gulf.

"I'm looking for advice on how best to market my product throughout the world."

Highlight of the week was the Millionaires Club meeting, featuring guest speaker Angela Giddens.

Ms Giddens is one of the UK's leading furniture designers and a former Welsh Woman of the Year.

More than 40 people turned up to hear her talk on how she became successful, and the challenges she has faced.

Dan Startup, a 22-year-old graduate of the school of art and design, said: "It was a valuable event.

"I've set up an animation film company called Manticore, in Newport, with two fellow graduates, and it was useful to hear how companies get started."
