Scottish legend Scott Hastings has warned Mike Ruddock's Wales side not to underestimate Scotland ahead of Sunday's Six Nations clash at Murrayfield.

Wales go into this weekend's game as firm favourites despite only winning once in 20 matches at Scotland's home of rugby.

And despite Wales fine form this year, which has seen them win their opening three games of their Six Nations campaign, 65-times capped Hastings has warned Ruddock's men that over-confidence could be there downfall at the weekend.

He said: "Wales will now be under added pressure, given their situation - and being over-confident might go against them.

"It's a long shot for Scotland, because the performance of Welsh rugby recently has been absolutely outstanding.

"The enthusiasm and quality of Welsh rugby is great at the moment - but while that can win you games, it can also be your downfall. Anything is still possible.

"There is a banana skin there, because Scotland will go into it with lots of confidence after the Italy game."

Scotland's victory over Italy a fortnight ago has put to bed any threat of another wooden spoon for Matt Williams side.

And Hastings feels that although the performance over Italy was their poorest of the campaign, the result was all that mattered.

He said: "The victory was the most important thing without a doubt.

"It wasn't the prettiest performance, but that wouldn't have mattered the players.

"What happened in terms of performance wasn't the greatest, but we wanted the win and we got the win.

"Sooner rather than later you will have to win games and play good rugby.

"But believe you me when that dressing room door shut there would have been a lot of relief in there.

"Scotland know they can play better but I don't think Italy played as well as they could have done. That was their poorest performance of the championship."

Scotland coach Matt Williams is a man under pressure and Hastings feels that defeat this weekend could see the end of the Aussie-born coach's reign.

Hastings said: "What I have said all along is that Matt is given a fair chance.

"But I know the first thing for a coach is to get the best out of the players, and I don't think that has happened.

"I still don't think the top players and experienced players are performing as well as they should be.

"Matt is very technically astute. But he has been trying to 'overplay' the game, and the players haven't been able to cope."

He added: "Some elements are right.

"But you should still go out and win games, and it's not all rosy in the Scotland camp," he said. "But the time to review the situation is at the end of the campaign, after he has had two years in place.

"There are two games left in the championship - but as a former international there are some concerns there in what is ultimately a very hard task for Matt Williams."
