PLANS to build a new magistrates court as part of the urban regeneration in Newport are a step closer, it was revealed today.
A planning application is currently being considered for the development of new magistrates courts in George Street, Pill.
Further applications are also expected shortly for new offices for the British Red Cross and a block which will be built by Bailey Developments, of Cardiff.
The city council is already building the roads and drainage required for the redevelopment.
As part of the work it is necessary to move some of the trees that currently line the site.
It has been decided to replant the trees in the grounds of Maindee Primary School, where they can provide a green border to the playing-field.
The work is to be done in the next week, before the growing season starts.
Carol Wadsworth, head teacher at Maindee, said: "We are delighted with the gift of these trees: we are very proud of the green environment around the school, and these trees will improve the bare area at the southern edge."
Councillor Ken Critchley, cabinet member for development and employment, said: "The council is committed to recycling in all forms. It is pleasing that we can replant these trees so that they can continue to give pleasure to a new generation."
