Newport speedway promoter Tim Stone has applied the finishing touch to the Prince of Wales Trophy meeting line-up at the Hayley Stadium on Sunday (tapes-up 2.30pm) - and what an astute move.

He has landed Stoke's Danish international Jan Staechmann, which immediately pits him once again with fellow countryman Kristian Lund who took his ice crown at Telford last month, denying him a hat-trick of wins.

Lund rode to a 15-point maximum but now the clash switches to the traditional surface and certainly provides the special ingredient to get the crowd buzzing when the pair line-up.

Stone said: "I am sure that Jan's inclusion will simply add to what promises to be an excellent opening meeting."

It's a quick reunion for the ice competitors with Newport's Mads Korneliussen and captain Tony Atkin also taking part. With Newport's Craig Watson and Somerset newcomer Magnus Zetterstrom in the field, it is a very competitive line-up.

Lund, who came to Newport from Newcastle last season, arrived back in Britain yesterday, but team-mate Korneliussen will not be back until later in the week, travelling with Niels-Kristian Iversen, the former Newport rider now with Elite League Oxford. Iversen and Korneliussen have attended a Danish training camp in Italy but that was curtailed to just two half days because of poor weather.

Stone is planning to run Conference League meetings as double headers, just as he did last season, a combination which proved successful.

But the Welsh derby with Carmarthen is in the melting pot for the west Wales club's future is still undecided, D-day expected to be March 24 when the showground committee meet to discuss the club's lease proposals.

The Dragons have not been included in the fixtures but there are spaces left in the provisional list if they are back in action.

l Stone will name his seventh rider to complete the Wasps line-up for the season later this week.

l It's an early start to the season this year with meetings at Berwick (home to Sheffield) in the Premier Trophy and Rye House taking on King's Lynn in a challenge meeting, both on Saturday.

There's the Newport meeting on Sunday and the Peter Craven Memorial meeting at Belle Vue on Monday.

l Wasps are staging their Press and practice tomorrow at Hayley Stadium (11am) and the public are welcome to attend.
