Youngsters in Rogerstone have collected more than 400 names on a petition calling for a community centre and multi-use games park.

Residents and young people fear that anti-social behaviour could become an issue if more facilities are not provided at Afon Fields.

The 340-name petition, supplemented by a second one carrying 100 names, will be handed in to Rogerstone Community Council on Wednesday. Residents hope that body will then pressure the city council.

James Doyle, 12, of Acer Way, a pupil at St Julians Comprehensive School, said: "We've had no support getting a skate park and some children round here have nothing to do, so they are getting in trouble with the police.

"Extra facilities would make a huge difference. There's nothing here except a park for the babies.

"I'm pleased with the number of names we've had. We want the council to put some facilities together for us, including a community centre."

City councillor Stephen Jones, also a member of the community council, said the area lacks facilities for young people.

He said: "There is a need both for a community centre to provide a focal point and a meeting place, and for external play facilities for children. Providing no opportunity for children to have space to play would exacerbate anti-social behaviour."

But he said the community council has supported voluntary groups and worked closely with the city council's youth services team.

He said the location of any proposed facilities must be carefully balanced with the views of nearby residents.
