A TIMBER business' sawmill was destroyed in a huge blaze last night.
Firefighters from Newport's three stations battled for two hours with a fire at Monmouthshire Timber Supplies, Alexandra Dock, Pill.
The sawmill was destroyed according to a spokesman for South Wales Fire Service.
The alarm was raised just after 10.30pm and firefighters from Malpas, Maindee and Duffryn fought the fire.
It was brought under control just after 12.30am but crews returned to damp down and monitor the scene during the night and this morning.
The spokesman said it was not yet known what caused the fire.
Fire officers were due to return to the scene and Newport city council was informed.
Monmouthshire Timber Supplies, which has been in the city for many years, is a specialist producer of wood packaging for the aluminium and steel industry including packing cases and pallets.
