WORCESTER Sauce contaminated with a cancer-causing colouring has been pulled out of kitchens at Gwent hospitals.
The sauce was found at the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall hospitals after hospital bosses were warned by the Food Standards Agency. No patients ate any affected food.
The discovery of illegal colouring Sudan 1 sparked a huge food scare last week, and prompted the withdrawal of 429 items, including ready meals, from all major supermarkets.
The Worcester Sauce, made for Crosse and Blackwell by Premier Foods, was supplied to the two main Gwent hospitals and some of the 20 community hospitals spread across the region.
A spokesman said: "We were alerted by the Food Standards Agency well before the story hit the headlines.
"The only product on the affected items list that we use is Worcester Sauce. We withdrew all existing stock immediately and returned subsequent deliveries to Premier Foods.
"None was actually used."
