Coach and Horses, Welsh Street, Chepstow
Situated in Chepstow Town Centre with a car park a few paces away, the Coach and Horses is in a convenient location and easy to find. Despite this, we arrived half an hour late, but were met by a cheerful bartender who recommended we eat in the bar area as the dining room was a little quiet on this mid-week evening.
With a few other diners and drinkers dotted about, the non-smoking area of the bar is clean and comfortable and, if you like beer mats, this pub has a vast and varied collection to view.
There are huge TVs at each end of the room and a few sofas if you fancy lounging about after your meal.
The menu is typical pub grub -- rump steak, gammon, chicken tikka masala and scampi -- or you could opt for something from the specials board, that is, mushroom stroganoff.
We chose an 8oz gammon with pineapple and an 8oz sirloin steak with pepper sauce. Both are served on sizzlers with a mountain of chips, onion rings, mushrooms and peas. A glass of dry white wine to wash it down and there wasn't a lot of room for dessert.
Nevertheless, I'm pleased to say we managed to accommodate the ample serving of hot chocolate fudge cake and squirty cream.
If you like no nonsense food and an easy-going, living room feel, the Coach and Horses is for you. And at £32.20, we can guarantee you get value for money.
