VALLEYS Labour MP Llew Smith today puts a grenade under the Blair government's general election campaign with a ferocious attack on New Labour policies.

Writing exclusively in the South Wales Argus, Mr Smith, a veteran occupant of an historic seat held by Aneurin Bevan and Michael Foot, calls Tony Blair a hypocrite intent on copying Tory policies.

In an article that will send shockwaves through Downing Street and Welsh Labour, only two days after the high-profile launch of its general election campaign, he said: "No service is safe from New Labour - schools, health, housing and even prisons are all experiencing their privatisation plans."

The left-wing "old" Labour stalwart, who stands down at the general election, goes on to savage Mr Blair on Iraq, fox-hunting, pensions, education and ID cards.
