POLICE are stepping up patrols after an area was hit by 40 burglaries in just a few months.
Officers say they are increasingly concerned about so called "creeper burglaries" in the Abertillery area.
They believe one gang is responsible.
Most of the raids have happened because people haven't locked doors or windows and the burglars simply creep in.
Ron Selway, who lives in Commercial Road, Llanhill-eth, was almost a victim of such a crime.
Inspector Mike Cotterall, of Abertillery Police Station, says he is worried an elderly person could disturb a burglar and be attacked.
He said: "It is only a matter of time before something like this happens. There were just six creeper burglaries in the Abertillery area during the same period last year."
The burglars have been gaining entry through insecure doors or windows -- police say they simply walk along streets, trying doors until they find one that is open.
Extra police patrols are being put on at night but Inspector Cotterall admits it is a huge task.
He said: "We have drafted in extra police but in an area that stretches from Sofrydd to Blaina it is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack."
He appealed to the public to telephone the police immediately if they see anyone acting suspiciously.
He is also appealing to people to make sure doors are locked and windows secured.
Cash, credit cards and mobile telephones are normally stolen in the raids, which have occured over the last five months.
Ron Selway, who lives in Commercial Road, Llanhilleth, almost became a burglary victim. He was asleep in bed at 3.45am when he heard a noise outside. When police arrived, they showed him marks on the locked front door where someone had attempted to get in.
His daughter Teresa Barker, also of Llanhilleth, was burgled in November. She had a purse stolen and her partner's wallet and credit cards were also taken.
Anyone with information should contact Abertillery CID on 01495 232247.
