John Griffiths, AM for Newport East, a long-standing republican, said: "It shouldn't be a public holiday and recent events show that Charles has enough landlord and business interests to fund the wedding himself.
"The event will leave me cold but he should be allowed to marry her and, on a human level, I wish them all the best."
William Graham, AM for South Wales East, said: "They will both be happy and the majority of people would prefer them to be married, especially since they have such a public position.
"The wedding should not be funded nor held any differently to any other royal wedding. It would be a shame if they chose a low-key ceremony."
Newport mayor councillor Paul Cockeram said: "It's long overdue. This is the 21st century. He lives with her so he should marry her.
"I know some great places in Newport for the stag do and I'd show Charles around."
Blaenau Gwent AM Peter Law added: "It makes positive sense. But I do hope he doesn't use state money. I think he can afford to pay for it himself."
