GWENT Police are responding to public calls for more foot patrols in problem areas of Newport.
Extra officers are being drafted in for the Bettws station's initiative. For six-weeks, Bettws, Rogerstone, Bassaleg, Malpas and Rhiwderin will have high visibility patrols in hot spot areas - places with anti-social behaviour and crime problems.
Running the drive is Sergeant Andrew Elliot and PC Sophie Whiting, of Bettws station.
Sergeant Elliott said: "There will be high visibility patrols, leaflets delivered with tips on crime prevention and we are encouraging members of the community to come forward with any crime problem or information."
Up to 10 extra officers, including community support officers and wardens, will patrol the crackdown areas from this weekend.
The police are also working with Newport council to help improve the security of council homes in the areas.
"Our Bobby Scheme already provides the vulnerable with security items and the council will help us by looking at the overall security of flats," said Sergeant Elliott.
PC Whiting, who is newly appointed at Bettws after working in Maindee for four years, said: "Members of the public can get in touch and help in making the community safer. They will be more confident in giving information on crime incidents."
