On your doorstep... DID you know that the Forest of Dean was designated the country's first National Forest Park for England?

That was in 1938 and the title was bestowed in recognition of the area's natural beauty. Things have moved on since then. Now the region is known for much more than just its fantastic natural habitat - although as one of the country's truly ancient forests it does hold a certain magic.

The district council, working with the local tourism association and local business, is promoting the area as a top-class visitor attraction. After all, tourism in the district is worth £94 million and supports 2,443 jobs.

So they have produced 60,000 copies of a new-look Royal Forest of Dean visitor guide, outlining 35 attractions.

The advantage for us in Gwent is that it is such a short drive away.

Nestling between the Wye Valley, the Vale of Leadon and the Severn Vale, the forest boasts a spectacular landscape in all seasons.

Wildlife is in abundance and the area has a fascinating history.

The guide features attractions including the Dean Forest Railway, the Dean Heritage Centre and Speech House.

Chairwoman of the Royal Forest of Dean Tourism Association Caroline Anderson said: "This new guide is the best yet. With its excellent visitor map it also helps direct visitors to quality places to stay." For further information visit www.fdean.gov.uk or call the council on 01594 810000.
