THE new bridge over the Usk and Newport's latest landmark now has a name - City Bridge.
Councillor Ron Jones, cabinet member for transport, said the new name marked a new future for Newport as a city.
He added: "There was a substantial amount of City Bridge names, or City-themed suggestions, both to the Argus and in what people suggested to me directly.
"We have a Town Bridge, but Newport is no longer a town and it's time to move forward."
Argus readers sent us hundreds of suggestions for a catchier name for the bowstring bridge, pictured, on the 55m Southern Distributor Road.
City-themed names were behind many ideas, including: City Bridge, City Xpress, City Link, Usk City Bridge and City Spanner.
Many other suggestions, like Lysaght's Bridge, or Orb Bridge, reflected the area's rich industrial heritage.
Councillor Jones said: "We thought of these but City really stuck out more than all the others.
"I would like to thank everyone who has shown such a deep interest. Unfortunately we couldn't use all the names and are forced to pick one.
"The bridge opened last November and it's been excellent. Most people I speak to say the road has created a totally new environment."
The Argus contacted readers, who wrote in with suggestions to see what they thought of City Bridge.
