A YOUNG mum and her baby were taken to hospital after a fire and arsonists set a prefab alight in two simultaneous fires in Newport this morning.

Firefighters from Cwmbran had to be called to the chip-pan fire at Cedar Road because two Newport crews were occupied with an arson attack on the Treberth estate.

The mother and her eight-month-old baby girl had returned to their top-floor flat shortly after 10am on Cedar Road to find dense smoke.

They were not injured but as a precaution an ambulance took them to city's Royal Gwent Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Just minutes before, firefighters from Maindee and Malpas stations were called to a blazing prefab that is due for demolition.

Alan Francis, sub-officer at Maindee, said: "This prefab fire is definitely deliberate. You can see where they've broken in through the thin wall. "These kids don't realise the trouble they cause.

"There was another serious call nearby this morning where lives could have been endangered."
