DESPITE Saturday's convincing victory over Italy, departing Wales coach Steve Hansen has urged the Welsh public to be patient.
Wales romped to victory scoring six tries against a hapless Italian side who never looked like getting anything from the game.
And Hansen, who took charge of Wales for the last time, feels that if "special players" such as Michael Owen are given the time to develop, then this is a Wales team that is now heading in the right direction.
"It was a brilliant performance and I'm proud of all the players," beamed Hansen, following the game.
"What was most pleasing is that we played a team on the same level and put in a top- notch performance.
"It was a complete performance in all areas of the pitch and we always looked in control of the game.
"Now compare our development to the Italy game last year, then you can see how we have improved over the past 12 months.
"But we must be patient because we are not there yet, and some players need the time to develop.
"Michael Owen, for example, is a special player, he is developing new skills all the time, and he'll develop into an outstanding player."
Saturday's game also marked a special landmark for Wales full back Gareth Thomas, who finally beat Ieuan Evans' record of being the country's highest try- scorer.
And captain Colin Charvis paid tribute to Thomas for beating the record and scoring his 34th test try for Wales.
"Ieuan's record was quite remarkable and now we can shift that record onto Gareth, and he deserves all the praise that will come with it.
"There have been times when he has taken a lot of stick and hasn't been involved with Wales, and it is down to his professionalism that he has beaten this record."
l Following Saturday's game, which was Hansen's last for Wales, WRU chief executive David Moffett paid tribute to the Kiwi coach.
He said: "On behalf of the WRU and the whole of the Welsh nation I would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to Steve.
"The players couldn't have given him a better send-off, and this is the first time an out-going Welsh coach has been cheered by the crowd.
"I'm sure many people will recognise that he has done a terrific job."
