WORLD champion snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan has praised Newport after retaining his Welsh Open title in the city last week.
O'Sullivan said all the world's top players look forward to coming to Newport because of the "special atmosphere" created by the fans. O'Sullivan said: "I had a good week and enjoyed the crowds.
"There seems to be a real special atmosphere in this arena. All the players enjoy coming here and look forward to coming here next year."
Councillor John Guy, cabinet member for culture and recreation, said: "Once again Newport has shown it is an excellent venue for hosting world- class sporting events.
"The people of Newport have given tremendous support to the Welsh Open over the past decade and their support has played a key role in developing the tournament into one of the highlights of the snooker calendar.
"It is pleasing to hear that the world's top snooker players enjoy coming to Newport as much as the city enjoys hosting them."
