NEWPORT will host the Cancer Research UK's Race for Life for the first time this summer.

Last year a total of 22,000 women across Wales, including Cwmbran, took part in the popular 5km, women-only events and raised more than £945,000.

National events executive Nic Clarke said: "We are delighted to be holding the event in Newport for the first time, it is going to be fantastic.

"Because of the huge response from other races this year we decided to bring the popular event to Newport."

Mr Clarke said many people from Gwent were competing in the Cardiff run.

He said: "Everyone living in and around Gwent can support the Newport event. Many people from Gwent were taking part in the Cardiff run, so there is a positive demand for it and I'm sure Newport will be a success." This year the charity is hoping to top last year's figure and are looking to go well over £1million in Wales.

"In total, across the UK, Race for Life is aiming to raise £24 million," he said.

"Our target for Newport is to see around 1,000 women taking part and hopefully to raise around £50,000," he added. The event is popular in Swansea, Llanelli, Rhyl and other Welsh towns and cities.

Mr Clarke said: "Thanks to Newport council and many other organisations we can hold the race in Tredegar Park, it is a beautiful venue."

The money raised through Race for Life provides much-needed funds for Cancer Research UK.

Race for Life is a series of 162 fundraising walks or runs open to all women across the UK. The fundraiser at Tredegar House and Park will take place on July 17 at 11am.
