The Rat Trap, Usk
On a cold and wet night the Rat Trap in Usk is the ideal place to relax and enjoy good company and great food. Despite snow outside the restaurant was full of people who had obviously tasted the food before or heard of the great reputation. The atmosphere is relaxed but service is good. From the minute you enter the traditional pub you are met and welcomed and given time to browse the menu and the specials board.
Looking through the tempting menu and choosing the favourite from the menu is tricky because there are so many options and so much tasty food on offer.
For starters I chose the game terrine with salad which was delicious and a great start to the meal.
My partner chose the deep fried whitebait with mayonnaise which came as a huge and tasty portion.
For main meal I opted for the chicken stuffed with mushrooms and garlic with bacon wrapped around the chicken in a white wine sauce with potatoes and vegetables.
This was delicious - the sauce was cooked to perfection, offering just enough so the chicken wasn't left dry.
My partner chose the shank of lamb with potatoes and vegetables and he thought the lamb was tender and delicious.
Despite having very little room left after the ample meal we had to taste something from the dessert menu to finish.
We both chose the apple pie with cream which was light enough to give a perfect end to the meal without leaving us too full up.
The whole meal was delicious, the environment was relaxed and cosy and the welcome friendly, definitely a place to visit in the area.
The meal plus drinks came to a very reasonable £50.85.
