A leading Asian restaurant in Newport is lending its support to the tsunami disaster fund by handing over its food takings for an entire day to the Red Cross.

The British Raj Indian restaurant in Rogerstone is holding a special tsunami fund-raising day on Tuesday in the hope of generating up to £2,000 for the disaster relief.

Proprietor Mashud Ahmed said he hoped Indian food enthusiasts in and around Newport would pay £15 a head to sample a wide range of the restaurant's specialty dishes so that all the proceeds would go towards the appeal.

He said "As an Asian restaurant, employing people from some of the countries affected by the tsunami, we feel particularly moved to do something to respond to the crisis. We feel confident we can rely on the generosity of the Newport community.

"There has already been a huge response from people in the area to the emergency and we hope we can add to that before the issue starts to fade from the public eye.

"We will be presenting a cheque to a Red Cross representative at closing time on that day," he said.

Meals for the tsunami relief will be served at the British Raj in Tregwilym Road, Rogerstone, from 12 noon until 10pm on Tuesday, February 1.
