NEWPORT County shareholders were told last night at the club's AGM that manager John Cornforth would be given the finances to bring in three or four new players to help fend of relegation.
Supporter-director Colin Everitt said the meeting had been "very positive" and that the nine existing board members were all re-elected and the new directors approved.
"The formal business section was pretty straight-forward and the question and answer section was always going to be lively because people are passionate about the club," he said.
"Obviously supporters are not happy with the current league position but we have worked hard to get some players to move on and explained that we are in a position to give the authority to John Cornforth to bring in three or four players in the short term and we have laid down plans for next season, where John can strengthen on a more permanent basis."
He added: "We know the squad needs strengthening, especially if there are a few injuries, and there are finances to do that, within a budget."
Everitt said the re-election of the board was described by chairman Chris Blight as an indication of support from the shareholders for what they were doing, but he admitted this season had been a massive learning curve.
"We can't keep harping on about it but we are a young board in football terms and mistakes have been made this season, but the experience will leave us better equipped to deal with next season.
"The important thing is that we do all we can to make sure that we remain in the division to give John Cornforth the chance of putting his own stamp on things."
On the subject of the manager, Everitt said the shareholders were reserving judgement. "They felt they could not judge him yet but the bringing in of players will give a better picture of how they feel.
"The board are fully behind John and there are several players that are being scouted and we have been impressed by the manager's network of contacts.
"He works very well with the players and the board and we know that we have the right man to keep us in the division and take us forward next season."
