A SECURITY guard was found lying in a Caerleon street today with head injuries.
The 41-year-old man, believed to be from Cwmbran, was guarding the site of flood defence work currently under way in the town.
The man was found by a member of the public in New Road, Caerleon at 6.40am this morning.
Scenes of crime officers were also in Isca Road and Lulworth Road, which were sealed off.
The man was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with head injuries, not believed to be life threatening.
Jeremy Lovell, an engineer working at the site, said he heard about the incident when they arrived at work at 8am.
He said: "We were shocked, he had been working on the project since the start in July and this is a nice area."
Police say they do not yet know how the man received his head injuries. They are asking anyone with information to contact them on 01633 838111.
