CWMBRAN super-featherweight Jamie Arthur is turning to the same London Harley Street surgeon as Ricky Hatton did in a bid to get his career back on track.
Arthur lost his unbeaten record at Bridgend on Friday night when his bout with Haider Ali was stopped due to a nasty cut on his left eye sustained after a clash of heads.
But now Arthur has decided that he has to go down the same route as WBU light welterweight world champion Hatton if he is to continue.
Hatton was a star on the rise back in 2000 when a bout with Jon Thaxton left him requiring 26 stitches above his left eye and it was decided that he would have to go under the knife if he was to be a genuine world contender.
After Friday's disappointment, Arthur said: "I'll have to talk to my management and see where I go from here. I think I will have to have the plastic surgery because I can't go on like this.
"I am not just fighting the other boxer, I am fighting these cuts and need to have something sorted.
"I have had problems in the past and knew right away when I felt the blood running down my face."
He added: "At the end of the day this problem has taken away my unbeaten record and I am devastated. "I want to carry on and fight for titles in the future and I believe that I can do that .
"The Celtic title was lined up but that will be too soon now because I will have to go and get this sorted."
Arthur's problem appears to be that the bones above his eyes are too sharp and that is the cause of the problems.
The surgery involved would be filing down the bone and grafting extra skin onto the area for protection, similar to what Hatton had done, although it was discovered that Hatton has lumps of solidified vaseline under the skin causing extra distress.
"We will go and see that same plastic surgeon who worked with Ricky (Hatton)," said Arthur's trainer, Newport's Tony Borg.
"Boxers have come back from defeats in the past, just look at Enzo (Maccarinelli who lost an early fight to journeyman Lee Swaby) and I expect Jamie to bounce back as well."
* Meanwhile the Welsh ABA Championships preliminaries, 25 fights, take place at the Pill Millennium Centre on Saturday, starting at 2pm.
Staged by St Joseph's ABC (admission £5), their representative Mo Nasir will be in action and is highly fancied to go on to win a title.
The semi-finals take place on February 10
