THE Argus-backed Sparkle Appeal is set to build a high profile during 2004, with a series of events being organised throughout the year.
Charity balls, concerts, sponsored walks, fun days, even a film premiere, are among the fundraising possibilities being pencilled in.
The aim is to give the appeal - to raise £6 million to build and equip a centre to cater for the needs of more than 1,200 disabled youngsters, and their families, in south Gwent - an attraction for as wide a range of people and age groups as possible.
The Argus is backing the appeal and has pledged to raise £250,000 during 2004 with the help of readers.
Charitable and private sector backing is being sought for a unique project which will bring together health, education, social services and voluntary services under one roof for the benefit of children from Newport, Torfaen and south Monmouthshire.
But public backing is vital too, and if the wholehearted support given to events like Sparkle Day last month is anything to go by, the appeal has already captured the imagination of Gwent people.
Events are being pencilled in across 2004 by appeal organisers keen to get children, families, businesses and public service employees involved in the mammoth fundraising effort.
These are likely to include family fun days in the summer, competitions involving Gwent schools, concerts by choirs, and another Sparkle Day, where pupils and employees at participating schools, businesses and other organisations are encouraged to pay £1 for the privilege of wearing something sparkly to lessons or work.
Energetic volunteers are being sought to form teams to take part in the Cardiff Half-Marathon in September, while those with a head for heights will be attracted by the prospect of abseiling down the sides of tall buildings at Gwent hospitals such as the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall.
The Sparkle Appeal is also planning a presence at what will be the biggest event held in Gwent this year - the National Eisteddfod at Tredegar House in August.

Events being planned by Sparkle Appeal organisers will form the foundation of the fundraising effort - but equally vital will be the efforts of you, our readers.
