WORK is due to begin this week on the 6m revamp of a Gwent leisure centre.
And while Pontypool leisure centre is being brought into the 21st century, youth groups and clubs across Torfaen have inherited hundreds of pieces of sports equipment and furniture following a mass clear-out of the premises.
Developers Kier Construction are due to sign a contract with Torfaen council tomorrow, and work is expected to begin immediately.
A spokeswoman said: "Torfaen council has made a firm commitment towards improving Pontypool leisure, and the level of funding made available from its own resources, in addition to grant support from the Sports Council for Wales and other sources, has enabled the scheme to encompass all the requirements of the original brief."
She added the bulk of the scheme would see improved facilities for "all sports and fitness genres".
Work will include a revamped pool and fitness suite, as well as an updated sports hall and caf facilities. In addition, access into the centre is to be "significantly" improved. Leisure chiefs are hoping for a summer 2006 completion date.
Among those benefiting from the gutting of the 30-year-old centre are Pontymoile Playgroup.
Manager Isobel Yacomen told the Argus she was grateful for the windfall, which included balls, skipping ropes, hoops, bean-bags and toys.
"Obviously it all helps us improve our physical exercise and healthy living programme, so we play a part in ensuring children are fit and healthy."
Other equipment such as table tennis tables and gym mats has gone to youth clubs across the borough, while community halls have had lights and furniture.
