FAMILY and friends of a baby suffering from a heart problem are to walk more than 20 miles to raise cash for research into the condition.

Ellie Eversfield, who is 16-months-old, suffers from dilated cardiomyopathy.

At present her condition, which can make her very tired, is controlled with medication. But her parents, Emma and Brian, have been told that children with the complaint sometimes need a transplant when they are older.

Now they have decided to arrange a sponsored walk to help fund vital research into finding a cure.

The couple and members of their family and friends will walk from Abertillery to Newport on February 14.

They chose St Valentine's Day because of its association with the heart.

"I don't know how much we will raise - anything at all will be good," says 27-year-old Emma, of Castle Street, Abertillery.

She will complete the walk, pushing baby Ellie who is her fifth child, despite suffering from arthritis.

"It will be difficult but I am going to have a go," she added.

Dad Brian is also going to do the walk, along with several members of the family.

Children taking part will be wearing fancy dress.

Anybody who wants to join the walk, or to sponsor the family, should contact Emma on 01495 215024.
