IT SEEMED a huge challenge, but now Gwent youngster Callum Arnold's life is a couple of weeks away from being transformed.
With the help of Argus readers his parents are to carry out vital improvements to their home in Abergavenny - improvements that will transform their lives, as much as their six-year-old son's.
As we reported in November, a fundraising campaign was launched for the youngster, who has a rare condition called Lesch-Nyhan, similar to cerebral palsy.
The condition means Callum, a wheelchair user, needs constant support.
Alterations including a new, specially adapted bedroom and bathroom, as well as an entrance to the house, were recommended by social services.
But although the couple were awarded a £30,000 grant, they faced an estimated total of £70,000 to fund the works.
Today, his mother Jane, 37, said the response from people in Gwent, including thousands of Argus readers, who organised events and made donations, had been "fantastic".
She added: "Argus readers were among the first to become involved in the appeal, and overall the reaction has been overwhelming.
"When it was recommended we had the alterations, we just didn't know how we were going to find the money."
The couple estimated they needed to raise £34,000, but were forced to press ahead with the work from January in order to qualify for the grant.
Work is progressing so well that the alterations could be complete in just over two weeks, but Mr and Mrs Arnold still need your help.
"We're very close to our target, but we're not quite there yet," said Mrs Arnold.
She added: "It really does mean everything - it's about transforming Callum's quality of life."
At the moment they have to carry their son up and down stairs, as well as providing day-to-day support in cramped conditions.
"The new bathroom and bedroom will be on the ground floor, and will be linked by a winch and runners on the ceiling," she said.
In addition, a new porch will provide easier access, as well as much-needed storage space.
"People have been fantastic, and we're going to be saying a special thank-you to everyone once it's all completed."
