PERFORMING arts students will get their first taste of acting with their presentation of Shakespeare's Macbeth at Newport's Riverfront.

The students from the University of Wales, Newport, will perform the bloody tale of murder, power and guilt, and get the chance to show off their acting skills in front of an audience.

The performers, taking new degree courses at the Newport School of Art, Media and Design, include 23-year-old Matthew Spencer, playing the title role.

Matthew, who is also a self-taught circus performer, said: "I am over the moon to have landed the part of Macbeth and really looking forward to appearing at the Riverfront."

Vittoria Rimola, 18, of Magor, is playing Lady Macbeth, and also designed the costumes for the production. She said: "This is the first real play I have done, and although I am a bit nervous about appearing in the Riverfront I am looking forward to it."

Course tutor Andy Smith said the students worked hard preparing for the production.

He said: "They have really thrown themselves into this production, participating in both acting and the technical side.

"This is the first of two productions that we hope to stage at the Riverfront this year under the banner of Vista Theatre."

The play is based on Orson Welles' classic 1936 production, and will be at Newport's Riverfront Theatre from Thursday, January 20, to Saturday, January 22. Ticket details on 01633 656 757.
