YOUTH expert David Williams is the sixth and final member of new Wales boss John Toshack's backroom staff, it was revealed yesterday.

The former Wales international and caretaker coach joins Brian Flynn and Alan Curtis in overseeing the under-21, under-19 and under-17 sides after carving out a reputation as an excellent spotter of talent.

Williams, currently the technical director in charge of Norwich City youth, spent five years working with the Manchester United youth academy and is well respected throughout the game.

Williams will continue to work with Norwich after Nigel Worthington agreed to allow him to link up with the national side and the Pentre born coach admits he is relishing the chance to link up with Toshack.

He said: "I had a brief association with the national team but that hasn't been for a number of years now so it's good to be back.

"I will be working alongside Alan Curtis and Brian Flynn and it is an exciting opportunity.

"The club have given me their blessing, in fact, they contacted Nigel Worthington first and he gave his blessing."

Williams is hoping he will be able to use his vast array of contacts to help youth supremo Brian Flynn in his pledge to bring on a new generation of stars

He explained: "Hopefully the experience I gained at Manchester United will hold me in good stead both in terms of coaching and contacts.

"You're well aware of those youngsters on the books of Premier League sides - it's those playing lower down in the football league that we need to find."
