SENIOR swimmers in Cwmbran helped to launch a free swimming scheme for over 60s yesterday.

The Assembly initiative allows all over 60s in Wales to swim free as part of a strategy for sport and physical activity.

Newport AM John Griffiths, Assembly deputy minister for older people, formally launched the scheme at Cwmbran Stadium.

Eighty-five-year-old Bernice Hopper, of Newport, swims at Maindee pool every day.

She said: "I think this is a great idea. It is something that will encourage older people to go swimming who might not otherwise go."

Free swimming for the over 60s already operates in Newport and Blaenau Gwent.
