VETERAN peace campaigner and Caerphilly county borough councillor Ray Davies, pictured, was jailed for 28 days today for non-payment of fines.
Davies, aged 74, of Pandy Road, Bedwas, was sent to prison by Caerphilly magistrates for wilfully refusing to pay £1,304.50 of fines, incurred following three anti-war protests over the past two years.
Davies told the court there was nothing they could do that would make him pay the money.
"My protests were an attempt to prevent the British government from creating a greater crime - waging war on Iraq," said Davies, who is vice- chairman of CND Cymru.
Half a dozen other peace campaigners including his partner, Wendy Lewis, held a demonstration in support of him outside the court.
