JOHN Cornforth was left "delighted" last night as Newport County produced a magnificent display to dump Weymouth out of the Nationwide Carthium Group Cup, but he admitted that he is scratching his head as to how the side can be so bad and then so good just four days later.

Cornforth went ballistic after County's 4-1 surrender at Tiverton in the FA Cup on Saturday but he got the response he was looking for as the side bounced back in style with a 2-0 victory over a full-strength Weymouth.

"I am absolutely delighted," he said. "But you don't know what you're going to get with the side. We need to sort out the inconsistency.

"I changed the shape a bit because at time we suffer because (Jason) Bowen and (Jon) Coates are not defensive minded but this gave us a more solid look.

"I don't like to single out players but Leyton Maxwell was excellent and the player who was marking him will be unravelling his legs all week.

"Darren Jones was outstanding and could've had a hat trick. He is a big powerful player with good technique and it gave him a break from defensive duties.

"It was something I had been thinking about for a while and with Matt Rees coming in, I could have a look at it and it seemed to work."

On the subject of the new centre half, who arrives from Crawley after spending four years at Millwall, Cornforth was beaming as Rees produced an almost flawless debut.

"He was absolutely awesome. He hadn't played for five weeks until Monday night (in a closed doors friendly at Team Bath) where he got 45 minutes but I just thought from the word go he was superb"

He added: "We have another tough game at home of Saturday (in the FA Trophy against Kettering) but after dominating this game, there is no better springboard."

County's captain Jamie Moralee revealed that the players were determined to make up for the FA Cup shocker at Tiverton.

"We owed the boss that one," he said.

"The boss wanted a (positive) response and I think that he got that.

"The boys were superb but we need to do that every week."
