SIR Ian Blair, 51, the brother of former Newport council chief executive Sandy Blair, is to be the new commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

Sir Ian is currently the deputy commissioner and will replace current chief Sir John Stevens in the new year.

Sandy Blair was formerly Newport council chief executive and head of the Welsh Local Government Association until his retirement last year.

He said: "Ian is a sharply intelligent but very personable police officer."

As head of the UK's largest police force Sir Ian, who is originally from Chester, will be in charge of more than 30,000 officers.
