NEWPORT County's home match against Grays might have fallen foul of the weather last night but boss John Cornforth did not view it as a night off.

Instead he stepped up his bid to bring in new faces in time for County's FA Cup clash at Tiverton on Saturday.

Cornforth took in a Shrewsbury reserve fixture yesterday and has his eye on a couple of players and he also has another former league player lined up for training tonight.

"It is unfortunate (the game was called off) because you don't like missing games, especially the home ones," Cornforth said.

"But the weather was against us on Saturday (in the 1-0 loss to Carshalton) and I am positive that if we had played that one on a dry pitch we would've won comfortably.

"But the response from the fans and from the board was very positive about the performance and if we play like that, then more often than not we will get goals."

He added: "I have got a couple of players I am looking at and one coming down to train tonight and Friday but I don't want to say too much until they are through the door."

Despite County struggling in front of goal last Saturday and being long in the market for a goalpoacher, Cornforth insists that he does not have too much of a problem up front.

He said: "I am looking at all areas. We have Jamie Moralee grabbing a hat trick last week and banging in goals this season as well as Carl (Wilson-Denis) is a threat and I think that John Phillips will get goals in this side.

"He could have had a hat trick on Saturday.

"I am looking at players in every position but have my hands tied a bit with regards to budget, but show me a non-league club who doesn't, we're all in the same boat."

Cornforth's attention has now turned to Saturday's FA Cup fourth qualifying round at Tiverton and he believes that County players will be going all out to make the first round proper.

He said: "It is a massive game and everybody is aware of the importance of making the first round.

"The club has struggled at Tiverton in the past but that is where it remains, in the past. We know what we have to do and the attitude of the players is right and they know it is shoot or bust time."

l County's league match at Eastbourne that was scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Tuesday, November 16.

A date has not yet been found for last night's postponed match against Grays.
