Newport County boss John Cornforth has warned his side that he is not yet satisfied with their level of performance, despite them banging in six goals on Wednesday, writes Michael Pearlman.

County crushed North Leigh 6-2 in an FA Cup replay to set up an away tie at Tiverton Town in the final qualifying round, but Cornforth is still expecting more from his players as they prepare to entertain Carshalton Athletic tomorrow at Spytty Park (kick-off 3pm).

Carshalton are struggling in the Conference South and Cornforth is urging his players to tighten up their game in order to pick up the three points.

He said: "We did what we needed to do on Wednesday against North Leigh in a typical cuptie. It was wet and wild stuff and we were really on edge in the first half.

"Full credit to North Leigh for making things tougher for us but of course I was pleased with the fact that we got the job done.

"But now all my attention and all the players' attention is focused on tomorrow's game. It is a really important one for us and we need to start playing well for longer periods of the match rather than just playing in little spells and that is something we are working on.

"I was very pleased with the contribution of Jamie Moralee on Wednesday (he scored a hat-trick) who is the ultimate pro, but I was also really impressed with young John Phillips.

"He went on and grabbed a goal and as a manager that always gives you something to think about.

"He could be in line to play tomorrow but it is too early to say because a few things might happen between now and then."

Cornforth has made no secret of his desire to bring new players to County and it would appear that he has stepped up his efforts this week and one or two new recruits could even feature on Saturday.

He explained: "I have made it very clear that I have a desire to increase the quality in this squad and I would like to think that we will have a couple of additions in time for tomorrow's game.

"I am looking to make improvements within a viable budget that is not going to get Newport County into any financial trouble and hopefully we can do that this week.

"It is too early to name names yet but I am hopeful that everything will be done soon."
