THIRTY-two boxes of highly dangerous and illegal fireworks were recovered by police at an address in Blaina.

A local man in his 50s is being questioned in connection with possession of the Chinese bangers.

The fireworks were discovered by police officers working in partnership with Safer Blaenau Gwent.

They have been taken to Brynmawr police station for secure storage until they can be disposed of safely.

Steve Jones, head of trading standards for Blaenau Gwent council, said: "I am delighted we were able to work with the police in this matter. Enforcement of the fireworks laws is a dual-role, so it makes sense to work together.

"The fact that bangers were found, indicates that these have probably been in the supply-chain for several years, as they've been banned since 1997.

"In that time, there is no knowing where or how they've been stored, so people are taking additional risks buying from such sources."

Gareth Jones, crime and disorder reduction officer for Brynmawr police, added: "At Brynmawr and Blaina police stations we are committed to tackling anti-social behaviour in all its forms.

"This includes the distress caused by the misuse of fireworks. "Our aim is to improve the quality of life for all residents of these areas." Gwent Police are appealing to anyone with any information regarding these fireworks to contact them on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Any person in possession of Chinese bangers should contact their local police station for further advice.
