THE 200th anniversary since Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick put the wheels of South Wales rail travel in motion.

And youngsters can go off the rails in celebration.

A year-long programme of events is underway to mark the building of the first steam engine.

Festivities start tomorrow with the rededication of the Trevithick monument at Pontmorlais in Merthyr Tydfil, the naming of the Richard Trevithick locomotive at the Merthyr railway station and the unveiling of new artworks.

Ramblers will also pull on their walking boots for a nine-and-a-half mile hike along Trevithick's landmark journey from Merthyr Tydfil to Abercynon. The day will close with a celebration gala evening at Cyfarthfa Castle, which includes the opening of a new steam exhibition.

The 12-month long celebration will see visits from some of the world's leading experts on Trevithick and rail travel.
