Premier leaders Newport will go to Carmarthen Quins on Saturday night with confidence - and caution.

Confidence stems from 15 tries in the champions' last two matches after defeat at Cross Keys.

Caution is prompted as Aberavon, who leaked eight tries at Rodney Parade midweek, and Llanharan are weaker than Quins.

Quins would be a "difficult one", Newport skipper Matthew Veater said in the programme. Last season Newport beat them only narrowly, 33-31, at home, and 20-17 away.

Coach Dai Rees was "generally pleased" with the way Newport played against Llanharan, except for "losing our focus in the last quarter, when we spilled the ball".

Moving to the top of the table with their eightth win in ten matches, they finished with seven tries to two in cold, wet conditions.

They were 29-7 up at halftime against last season's Division One champions, who were without ten regulars through injury.

Both sides used all their replacements, Ricky Williams taking over at half-time from Newport full back Andrew McLouglin, who had knee trouble.

Tommy Walsh scored Newport's sixth try two minutes after replacing scrum-half Bryan Shelbourne, who went over in the first half.

Another replacement, flanker Sam Waldron, snapped up the last try six minutes from the end.

Outside-half Daniel Griffiths, whose stoppage-time penalty clinched the home victory over Carmarthen last year, kicked 11 points.

They included four conversions - two from wide out.

Newport's back held trumps, with Veater and number eight Rhys Jones setting the standard. Both won good lineout ball, and Veater's fellow lock, Darren Davies, scored a try after a forward surge from a line-out.

Wing Gareth Chapman's try gave Newport a fourth-minute lead which Llanharan outside-half Mark Roper cancelled out three minutes later.

"He took a quick kick when some of our players were still talking with the referee - Llanharan were streetwise," said one Newport official. Griffiths' 35-metre straight penalty and conversion of Davies' try from near the touchline restored Newport's confidence.

A try in each half for wing Will Kershaw-Naylor merely confirmed the green light for the Black and Ambers.
