The GS500F's air-cooled 487cc parallel twin is the ideal engine for a mid-size all-rounder; a proven blend of sporty character and performance, ease of use, and modest running costs. The classic parallel twin layout has several inherent merits: it's light and compact, with a distinctive twin-cylinder engine note and abundant low-down torque that propels the bike out of tight corners with a reassuring shove. And its mechanical simplicity means low serving requirements.
Transistorized electronic ignition and twin Mikuni BSR34 carburettors ensure smooth, capable power delivery right from tickover, Plus, excellent fuel economy and a 20-litre fuel tank combine to realize an ample touring range - essential with a bike that you won't want to get off. For reliability, an air-cooler keeps the oil temperature normal whether you're riding in the city heat or on the open highway. And for environment-friendly performance, the GS500F for Europe and California incorporates a Pulsed-secondary AIR injection system and a catalyser that together keep emissions within Euro 2 limits.
The GS500F's low centre of gravity allows Suzuki to employ a compliant suspension setup for ride comfort without impairing the fine balance and precise geometry that make for an exciting and rewarding ride experience. And to keep the ride smooth with or without a passenger, the rear damper allows preload adjustment in seven steps. Low weight and a low centre of gravity benefit the rider not only on the open highway but also in town, where they promote easy manoeuvring in traffic.
