TWO youngsters were today due to be honoured after they saved a girl from a fast-flowing river.
Scott Crowley and Daniel Clutterbuck staged the dramatic rescue in July when their friend Emma Williams, 11, fell in Afon Lwyd.
The boys helped terrified Emma scramble to safety. Luckily she was unhurt.
Today they were due to be treated to their own civic reception with Torfaen's mayor, Councillor Yvonne Warren.
"I'm so proud of him, it really is wonderful," said Daniel's mother Joanne Courtney, who lives in Machine Meadow, Pontnewynydd.
"He's a very modest boy, so I think he's a bit overwhelmed by it all. We're all really looking to Monday,"
Daniel's grandparents, Brian and Helen Courtney, will also be attending.
"It's absolutely wonderful - we're very proud of him," said Mrs Courtney.
The 12-year-old Trevethin Community School pupil told the Argus he didn't have time to think, as last July's drama unfolded.
He said: "I heard a splash, and saw that Emma had fallen in - it all happened really quickly.
"I just reached down to help, and Scott saw what happened and ran down to help."
West Mon School pupil Scott, 14, of Torfaen Terrace, said: "She was pretty scared and had to push against the current to get to where we could pull her out."
The two lads hauled their friend to safety and took her home.
Emma's mother Carol, also of Machine Meadow, said the boys' award was well deserved.
She said: "I couldn't thank the boys enough for doing what they did, and I'm very pleased they're going to get recognition.
"I was shocked when I saw where she fell, it could have been so much worse - I'm just so grateful they were there."
Councillor Warren said: "These two boys are a credit to their families and the Torfaen community.
"I feel proud to honour them for their actions.
"This reception will be a chance to honour them for their bravery."
