* Caerleon (or Caerllion) was an important town in Britain even before the Romans arrived and turned it inro a major fortress. Their second Augustan Legion was housed there and they named it Isca Silurum.

* What did the Romans ever do for us? - well, they built extensive baths and an amphitheatre which is a dramatic setting for theatre and festivals to this day.

* If you fancy seeing what a day in the life of a Roman Soldier or a citizen of Caerleon would be like and comparing it to that of a student of today, visit the town's Roman Legionary Museum and see for yourself.

* The Romans were not the only ones to settle down in Caerleon. The Normans built a castle beside the River Usk.

A lot of it is destroyed but a tower remains, rather conveniently next to the Hanbury Arms, which apparently is Caerleon's oldest inhabited buiding.

* Did you know that a King Arthur was crowned in Caerleon in the 5th CenturyAD? Of course you did!
