THE Argus' Sparkle campaign has received a major boost after being chosen by Newport's mayor as one of his official charities.
This year, the city's new mayor, Councillor Paul Cockeram, is to support a number of local causes including the Argus' bid to raise £250,000 towards a new centre for disabled children in Gwent.
Carers' charity Crossroads, and the Parkinson's Disease Society will also equally benefit from the fund.
Mr Cockeram told the Argus he chose the three charities because of their local focus and age range.
He said: "I want the fund to help a wide range of people, from the very young to the middle-aged to the elderly.
"And at the end of the year I want people to be able to see just what their money has done for people here in Newport."
A mayoral charity committee is being set up to co-ordinate and organise events.
Councillor Cockeram said: "A committee will ensure we are able to draw on the expertise of the charities themselves, local businesses and the public sector.
"My aim is not just raising money, but also raising the profile of the charities, so that more people are aware of the good and hard work done for people in Newport."
