FRANK Gregan has refused to rule himself out of the running for the Newport County manager's job.

The Weston-super-Mare boss is the one many fans pick to succeed Peter Nicholas after working wonders at non-league level with Weston and Forest Green Rovers.

And he told the Argus: "It is flattering to be mentioned in connection with the job because Newport County are a massive club with boundless potential.

"Every manager in the area will have taken notice of the vacancy and will be rightly interested.

"It is a great club and a massive draw. But I am with Weston-super-Mare at the moment, although you can never say never in football."

Gregan remained evasive as to whether he would be applying for the job, although he did hint that he has the credentials that County would find beneficial.

And with his own club in financial trouble with the wage bill being halved and the entire playing squad being placed on the transfer list, the time may be right for him to make the switch.

He said: "The first person I would tell if I was thinking of applying would be my chairman, and I haven't done that.

"But Newport would be a massive challenge, and if they get it right, who knows where they could end up?

"There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, but my CV shows that every club I have managed in football I have taken up two divisions.

"But as I say, I am at Weston at the moment until anyone says otherwise."

Meanwhile, managerless County are in action tomorrow as they host Cambridge (kick-off 3pm) and hoping to get back on track after two defeats on the bounce and only four points taken from the last six games.

Academy boss Glyn Jones will take the team again, and he explained that County have a few fitness worries.

He said: "Scott Young and Nathan Davies are 50/50 at the moment.

"Scott has a thigh problem and Nathan took a bang on the ribs last Saturday (against Basingstoke).

"But the rest of them should be OK and looking to get back to winning ways."

Jones has amber blood running through his veins and is watching with interest the situation regarding the incoming manager.

He said: "There is massive potential here, and I think there will be a lot of interest in the job.

"It is one of the biggest positions in non-league, and the set-up regarding youth and the structures in place are bound to attract several managers."
