WHEN Andrew Thomas hit the turf and broke his leg against Chippenham Town back in January, many Newport County fans were left wondering if the classy defender would ever add to his 100-odd appearances for the club.
But after a long, hard slog back to fitness the 21-year-old finally made his first start in County's 1-0 victory over Bognor Regis.
"It is just great to be back playing again," said Thomas. "It has been a hard time, so it is a good feeling to be back on the pitch."
Thomas slotted in effortlessly last weekend even though it was alongside an new-look defence, the youngster did not look out of place.
He said: "There are some great players in there who helped me through the match. Guys like Darren Jones, Scott Morgan and Kevin Aherne-Evans and of course big Roger (Freestone) were constantly talking me through it.
"I felt pretty good. Obviously I need a bit more sharpness but hopefully that will come with a few games.
"The most important thing was that we kept a clean sheet and that result was for the gaffer. We all took a bit of flak after not winning in three games, but hopefully now we can go on a bit of a run."
County are in action today, away to Basingstoke (kick-off 3pm) and Thomas is hoping that he has shown enough to keep his place, despite the return to fitness of Scott Young and fellow defender Lee Phillips.
He said: "That's up to the gaffer but hopefully I have given him a reminded of what I can do and give him a bit of a selection headache."
l Next week's home fixture against Cambridge City (September 18) has been announced as a "Fans' Fixture".
This will involve children's entertainment and prizes as well as the offer of complimentary tickets for regular fans who want to bring a friend to the match.
Tickets are available at the club up to the day before the game (Friday) and the scheme has been backed by all of the supporters groups.
The club said: "The special day is part of the club's thank you to fans in the 15th season since the formation of the club and "for being some of the best and most loyal supporters in non-league football.
"Also for building and supporting the new 200 club, for supporting the new loyalty scheme which aims to raise £15,000 for the club this summer and for volunteering time and donating money to support the activities of the club."
